OUR GRIFONCINOS

The Dog Story

My passion for animals, especially for dogs and horses, started in my early childhood.  As a passionate horseback rider and owner, I was used to the responsibility and training commitments at a very early age.  During this time, I obtained a great deal of hands-on experience in adequate keeping, care taking, structured training and competitions. When I grew up the idea of responsible breeding and the raising of dogs was always in the back of my mind.

Dogs were always part of my life whether they were in our family home or the stray dogs that became part of the stables.  I began to be aware of these stray dogs especially, and as they weren’t spayed or neutered, the mothers had litter after litter.

I have had a similar experience here in Hong Kong.  There are many stray dogs and also many groups of caring volunteers who actively create awareness, provide food and foster homes for these animals.  Many local Chinese and expatriates are passionate dog lovers.  When they are looking at buying a puppy their choices are either a local bred, or if they prefer, a pure breed.

However, there are pockets of dubious local breeders who sell puppies that they allege to be pure breed.  Unwary owners have had the heartache later to discover that their “pure breed” puppy is not a pedigree and in some instances the dogs have had generic illnesses due to the unethical breeding practices that occur in “puppy mills”.

Sadly there have been cases of dogs in these puppy mills that are kept in cages where are impregnated and have litter after litter.  The puppies are sold at a high price; the potential buyer won’t have access to the history of the puppies or the conditions of which the kennel is kept. But hopefully the new law in place will help to guarantee good quality, well socialised and loved purebreds.

Reputable breeders can be sourced in other countries such as Australia, New Zealand and US to name a few.  However, this can be expensive when taking into account the flights to the country of origin, the paper work, health checks and export and import licenses that are required when importing a puppy from overseas.

I saw an opportunity to fulfill my childhood dream of responsible dog breeding and at the same time, provide people the market for good quality, healthy puppies from a reputable dog breeder.   Our healthy bitches and their mates were chosen carefully after a lot of research into their ancestry and sound knowledge of their families.  We take pride in the fact that our dogs and their puppies will provide their genes to future generations of Labradors in Hong Kong.
